Copy Tip of the Week
The 5-Second Test for Stronger Headlines 🚀
If your headline doesn’t pass this “5-second test,” it’s probably not ready.
Here’s how it works:
Read your headline and ask: Can I instantly understand what this is about within 5 seconds?
If the answer is “yes,” congrats – you’re on the right track!
If the answer is more like “wut?,” congrats – you’ve got some work to do. 🙂
Let’s look at an example
❌ A Revolutionary Solution for Everyday Problems
👉 It’s too vague. What’s the solution? What’s the problem? Who’s this for?
✅ How This $10 Tool Saves Busy Moms 5 Hours a Week
👉 Now it’s clear, specific, and instantly connects to the audience.
Why this works
Clarity hooks attention.
People don’t have time to decode a mystery, especially in a world where scrolling thumbs are king (or queen).
Make it quick, make it obvious, and make it valuable.
💡 Pro Tip: Test it on someone who has no idea what you’re selling. If they get it immediately, you’re golden. If not, keep refining.

Must-Read Articles
How to Pick a Message (via Voicemail)
Why I recommend it 👉 If you’re wrestling with how to pitch your product, then this is a must-read. Borrowing from the timeless wisdom of one of the greatest copywriters (Eugene Schwartz), Grace walks through the importance of identifying your audience’s desire before picking up your pen to craft any sort of message.
Rethink Your Targeting (The Playbook)
Why I recommend it 👉 First of all, this is the 3rd week in a row I’ve featured an article from The Playbook (subscribe to their email list here). But second of all, this is such valuable insight when picking out how you’re going to position your product. It highlights the contrasting behaviors of younger consumers, who seek quick fixes and lower prices, and older consumers, who value quality and brand loyalty.
24 Ways to Write a Tagline (via Shlomo Genchin)
Why I recommend it 👉 This is more of a social media post than a traditional article, but it’s valuable just the same. Bookmark this one for later – it contains 24 rhetorical devices for helping you write not only taglines, but headlines too.

Why I recommend it 👉 Nudges. As marketers, especially those in the thick of acquisition and retention marketing, we pride ourselves on being able to nudge prospective buyers at just the right time.
But why do those nudges work in the first place? And are they damaging to our ultimate aim?
This was a fascinating interview with Eva van den Broek and Tim den Heijer, authors of The Housefly Effect. They chat about how subtle cues or triggers in our environment affect our behavior.
A worthwhile listen for anybody in our niche!

Pretty Fly Copy
HUCKBERRY
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 First of all, I know Huckberry is notorious for super long emails. But I liked their approach with this one as it was Q&A based, but very much in their own Huckberry style. If you’re a reader who’s uncertain of where to make a first purchase, this was a great campaign for you.
HUG SLEEP
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 What a fun (and funny) Valentine-themed email. It’s product-centric and problem/solution focused. As someone who shares a bed with another, it’s right on the nose.
MIRO
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 While I don’t necessarily love the hero section, I love what follows in the body with the separate modules. They’re perfect examples for how to write features as benefits.
BRIGHTSTOR
Format: Video/Commercial
Spotted By: Jason Feifer
Why I like it 👉 Same reason Jason mentions in his post: The script and direction of the commercial helps people feel the core problem and see themselves in it. Fantastic writing about the risks of not adopting a product.
COUNTER CULTURE COFFEE
Format: Instagram Ad
Why I like it 👉 Eye-catching visuals, for one. But it’s simple value-based copy targeting anybody addicted to good coffee who works in an office, and more than likely, manages all those goodies in the break room.
